Art and sneakers – now that could be a match made in heaven. At least, that’s what the people at Vans thought, so they a struck up a partnership with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Yes, you heard correctly. Vans and the Van Gogh Museum are introducing an artistically styled collection that creates an exciting juxtaposition of Van Gogh’s masterpieces and Vans shoes.
A share of the profits will go to the Van Gogh Museum to preserve the art works for the appreciation of future generations.
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous post-impressionist painters in history. He’s known mainly for the emotional, intensely colourful style he deployed to translate his personal view of the world into art. The Dutch painter and illustrator is regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern painting. This talented artist created over 2,100 works in the course of his career.
Working closely with the Museum, Vans selected four of his major works. Sources of inspiration for the collection were the motifs Skull, Almond Blossom, Sunflowers and Van Gogh’s self-portrait. These are now the focus of an extensive Vans collection that presents some of Van Gogh’s artworks in a new light.
As well as Van Gogh’s actual paintings, the Vans designers also took inspiration from the 700+ handwritten letters Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. Some of the illustrations and extracts from the letters are used on the Classic Slip-On.
The shoes have been intricately designed right down to the last millimetre. Even the foot bed of the shoes is decorated with Van Gogh’s characteristic brush strokes, the Vans logo and the Van Gogh Museum logo.
The collection will be available from 3 August 2018 from vans.com/vangogh, directly from Vans Stores as well as from all well-known retailers around the world – and of course also at the museum shop of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
